Take part!

If you are 16 or older, live in England and are (British) Pakistani or (British) Bangladeshi then you can make a difference to the future health of your community by taking part.
To learn how to volunteer, start by watching the video below (available in English, Urdu and Bangla). You can also read the steps underneath for more details.

1.Read the study information

Read the study information and decide if you want to take part.

2.Fill in a short online form

You can find the form here.

3.Freepost a spit sample

Once you have completed the short online form, we will send you a kit to collect your spit sample. Our scientists will use your spit sample to collect your DNA and we’ll work to uncover the causes of good and bad health. For instructions on how to collect your spit sample, please see the bottom of this page.

We also recruit face-to-face in the community, for more information contact us on [email protected] to find your nearest recruitment area.

If you are taking part at a recruitment stand one of the study team will give you instructions.

If you are taking part at home, follow the instructions in the pack to give a saliva sample. Remember:

  • Do not eat, drink, or chew paan for half an hour before giving the spit sample.

  • Wash your hands with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser after giving a sample.

  • Put the sealed sample in the return envelope and put it in a post box.

How do I use the spit kit?

  • Do not eat, drink, or chew paan for half an hour before giving the spit sample.
  • Spit into the funnel, closing your mouth around the funnel to create a seal until the amount of liquid saliva (not bubbles) reaches the fill line.
  • Hold the tube upright with one hand. Close the funnel lid with the other hand by firmly pushing the lid until a loud click is heard. The stabilising liquid in the funnel lid will be released into the tube to mix with the saliva.
  • Hold the tube upright. Unscrew the funnel from the tube.
  • Use the small cap to close the tube tightly.
  • Shake the capped tube for 10 seconds. Discard funnel lid.

Returning your sample

Put the sealed sample back in the box and put the box in the provided envelope. Put the envelope in any post box and it will be sent to the Genes & Health team in East London:
