At Barts Charity we help to fund the amazing work that goes on in the six hospitals of the Barts Health NHS Trust and its associated medical school.
Because we are independent of the Trust, we are able to support innovative projects that wouldn’t normally be funded through the NHS.
Best of all, 100% of the donated funds go to the chosen cause.
With your help we can achieve so much more
Our vision is simple: to promote excellence in healthcare.
Together with your involvement, we can make a huge difference to the lives of children, young people and adults in the City and the East End of London.
Social Action for Health is a community development charity, which works alongside marginalised local people and their communities towards justice, equality, better health and wellbeing.
We currently operate mainly in East London, UK with 9 full time staff and 120 part time and sessional staff, local people trained by SAfH to work with their community in their mother tongue, including Bengali, Urdu, Arabic, and English.
Four values shape our work:
- We start with the people
- People have the right to take control of their own lives
- People’s health can be improved by tackling isolation, poverty, racism and unemployment
- Healthy communities are good for the whole society
The Centre of the Cell is dedicated to inspiring curiosity and learning by connecting science to everyday life. Through this unique interactive multimedia experience, embedded within a working medical research laboratory at the Blizard Institute, Whitechapel, E1 2AT, we will positively impact the career and personal health life choices of young people.
Our research team found that young people have difficulty understanding cells, find science boring and think that scientists are white, male, middle-aged and mad. Cell biology and an understanding of sickness and health is a substantial part of the Science National Curriculum at Key Stages 2, 3 and 4. Science, and the ethical issues that biomedical research increasingly raises, underpins the future development of our society. There is currently no dedicated resource aimed at young people and their teachers to help them learn and teach about cells and medical research.
We aim to
- welcome up to 40,000 visitors each year for a life changing experience
- become the world website of choice for people to learn about cells
- be a new model for outreach for young scientists to learn about science communication
In 2015, we will welcome our 100,000 visitor ! Many of our visitors are from East London.
East London Genes & Health is partnering to greatly enhance the genetics and genomics science education provided by Centre of the Cell.

The NIHR Clinical Research Network is the clinical research delivery arm of the NHS. We operate nationally across England through a national coordinating centre and 15 local branches delivering research in the NHS across all disease areas.
The NIHR Clinical Research Network: North Thames is hosted by Barts Health NHS Trust. The host is responsible for ensuring the effective delivery of research in the Trusts, primary care organisations and other qualified NHS providers throughout the North Thames area.
The MRC is a publicly funded organisation dedicated to improving human health. We support research across the entire spectrum of medical sciences, in universities, hospitals and in our own research units and institutes across the UK and in Africa.
The heart of our mission is to improve human health through world-class medical research. To achieve this, we support research across the biomedical spectrum, from fundamental laboratory-based science to clinical trials, in all major disease areas. We work closely with key stakeholders and other research funders in the UK and internationally to deliver our mission, prioritising research that is likely to make a real difference to clinical practice and the health of the population.
The MRC was established in 1913 and incorporated by Royal Charter in 1920.
The MRC has funded the East London Genes & Health Research Centre, to open on the Queen Mary Whitechapel campus in 2016.
The Wellcome Trust is a global charity, committed to realising the full potential of biomedical research to improve health.
We are independent of both political and commercial interests. Our independence enables us to take a flexible and long-term view. We can also move rapidly to grasp emerging opportunities as they arise. We adopt a catalytic and transformative role in driving forward biomedical research, and we work with a wide variety of partners to maximise the value of our funding.
We support diverse activities that span basic, clinical and public health research, technology transfer, medical humanities and public engagement. This gives us an unparalleled breadth of vision – bringing multiple perspectives to bear on key health challenges and setting advances
Our funding philosophy centres on supporting and developing the very best researchers, and giving them the resources that they need to undertake research of the highest quality. We strive to be bold and adventurous, nurturing creativity and innovation and backing ambitious initiatives.
The Wellcome Trust was created in 1936 on the death of Sir Henry Wellcome. Through his will, Wellcome vested the entire share capital of The Wellcome Foundation Limited, the drug company he founded, in a charitable trust dedicated to furthering understanding in the biomedical sciences and the history of medicine.
We are a major funder of research in the UK and in low- and middle-income countries. We help to create world-class research environments in the locations in which we fund, and are a prominent advocate for research and health. We work to shape the global research agenda and to influence policy at national and international levels.
East London Genes & Health is funded by a Strategic Award from the Wellcome Trust.
